The Great Shakeout

Tomorrow at 10:18 am, Prestwood will join more than 11 million other California schools participating in The Great Shakeout. The Great Shakeout is a world-wide effort to prepare and educate students in the case of an earthquake. At our last Prestwood assembly we talked about the upcoming earthquake drill and modeled what students should do. Teachers are also reviewing expectations and practicing today. Tomorrow we will have a school-wide earthquake drill and then evacuate the classrooms.

Practicing is important for children and adults. The more we practice, the more confident we will be in responding to an emergency. At Prestwood we practice fire drills every month and earthquake drills three times a year. We also partner with the Sonoma Police Department, and we will have officers here to observe our drill tomorrow and give us feedback.

Parents can also help. Talk to your children about emergency preparedness. Some students are scared by the drill and all it implies. Listen to their concerns and reassure them. You confidence and reassurance will go a long way. You can also review how to respond to an earthquake at home. In an emergency, preparation will keep our children safe. Please contact us if you have any questions.
